Philippe Bornet (PhD Lausanne, Switzerland) is researching and teaching at the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations of the University of Lausanne. Specialized in the comparative history of religions and south Asian traditions, he studied and researched at the universities of Lausanne and Tübingen, and was a visiting scholar at the Vishvabharati University in 2008 and at the University of Chicago in 2010. He wrote a doctoral dissertation on hospitality practices in Indian and Jewish normative literatures, now published as a book. His current research deals with relations between India and Europe and more specifically, Swiss missionaries in South India (Karnataka and Kerala) in the beginning of the 20th century and their interactions with local traditions. Among other topics, he has been teaching on methods and theories in the study of religion, the history of relations between India and Europe (including Silk road history) and the history of orientalism. His recent publications include Rites et pratiques de l’hospitalité: mondes juifs et indiens anciens, 2010, Religions in Play: Games, Rituals and Virtuals Worlds, 2012 (ed. with M. Burger) and L’orientalisme des marges (ed. with S. Gorshenina), 2014.
